My husband and I haven't been away together overnight without our children since my daughter was born, she is 4. So it's about time! We have some extra money from our tax refund we would like to spend on a 3-night getaway just for us. I would like to do something "spa" like, but that might be too laid back for him. Whatever it is we just want to be together without someone saying "mommy, mommy, daddy". So, any suggestions? I'm happy to stay kind of local (we live in San Jose) or travel on a plane. We have about $1500 to blow. Thanks everyone!!!

What can I do next?

I have 2 suggestions actually. The first is Napa Valley. The Holiday Inn Express in Fairlfield is only 15 minutes away and is pretty nice. It's close to the Jelly Belly factory if you wanted to tour and bring home something for the kids. It is absolutely beautiful there. There are many wineries you can check out and even some wine train tours. I lived in Italy for 2 1/2 yrs and Napa Valley actually looks similar to the Florence area. The other suggestion would be to go up to Yosemite if you are nature lovers. There are some great hotels up there and it is so beautiful and peaceful . It is one of my family's favorite places to go with or without kids. You can hike up to the falls or take nature walks. Mariposa is a nice town nearby where you can do some tourist shopping. Good luck and have fun!

How about going down the coast to Santa Barbara or SLO? Its close enough to drive, and the coast is just beautiful there.

We just recently went to Palm Springs. Spas were nice, swimming was great (weather was hot) and cactus were in bloom and beautiful. Flights from SFO are pretty inexpensive.

Why don't you save the airfare money and travel time by going to the San Francisco? A great grown-up getaway is the Hotel Vitale (Spa, yes!). It's hip, but not too hip and just across the street from the ferry building.

Then gorge yourselves on dim sum, go to the theater, shop, and relax. Sometimes it's good to stay close on your first getaway too, for mommy anxiety reasons...

If you're looking for something remote, consider Big Sur. If you want more people interaction, then Calistoga or Napa Valley. To travel, consider Rio Caliente in Mexico.
Have a great time!

HI there B. G,

My husband and I just celebrated our 10th anniversary last September, and we stayed at a Bed and Breakfast in Mendocino,CA called The Brewery Gulch Inn. This place is awesome! It's made out of old salvaged redwood, and is beautiful! The staff is awesome, and the owner Guy is one of the most incredible people you'll ever hope to meet! There are so many things to do and see in Mendocino, it's worth the drive, though you could fly into the closest local airport! The rooms are beautiful, we had an ocean view! They have hourderves and wine tasting at 5 every night, and you get to sample some of the local wines and beers. The chef also prepares some of the most incredible foods that you could have a dinner out of a simple wine tasting! They also serve free breakfast, and it's insane! Five star food, for free! You can also order picnic lunches to take and enjoy, and you get a bottle of wine in your room waiting for you when you arrive! I can't say enough how wonderful our trip there was! Guy makes sure his guests are well taken care of, and he always does it with a smile! I do hope you'll REALLY consider going there, you'll be glad you did! You can vistit their site at www.brewerygulchinn.com .

I had been wanting to get away with my guy for the longest!!! I got my tax return money and we had been wanting to take a vacation and finally decided to take our 7 day cruise to mexico. You can also do a 3-4 day cruise to Ensenada and Catalina Island, they also have spa's on the ship. I have heard through other people that it's a very beautiful cruise!!!

My husband and I attended a wedding last year out in Cambria, CA (near SLO). We stayed in a nice little hotel, right by the beach. You also have Hearst Castle nearby. I was really surprised to see a lot of wineries out there. It was a nice relaxing little get away.
