Maui! Anywhere in Hawaii is great, but Maui is my favorite. I so wish I could afford to own a second home there so I could go a couple of times a year.

If you want cheaper airfare, you could look at Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes (southern CA). There's supposed to be a lot of great stuff to do there for adults and kids. It's fairly secluded, so you probably wouldn't leave the property much.

You could also look into San Diego. I don't know of specific resorts, but I know they have great ones down there.

If you have a cruise port near you try that. Cruises are wonderful and can be as relaxing or active as you chose. Most lines have kids clubs. And you get beautiful scenery.

Try The Phoenician in Scottsdale, AZ. That shouldn't be far from you. Awesome and beautiful. Make sure your camera is always charged because there are so many picture perfect moments there.

I like Rhonda's Texas idea too :)

Galveston - San Luis Resort has everything you'll need with the beach right across the street. There is also Moody Gardens conference center and they have their own beach. Galveston also has Schlitterbahn and a new boardwalk.

Wild Oak Ranch in San Antonio and Lost Pines in Bastrop are 2 very gorgeous resorts tucked away from everything. They have cabanas around the indoor/outdoor pools & a lazy river, huge water slides, kids camps, golf, spa, arecades, lobbies with big screen TVs where you can watch anything, playgrounds, cafes. Both have very rustic gorgeous settings. Lost Pines offers more rugged activities but both are 5 star service and amenities. You will NOT be disappointed if you go to either!

My vote is for Hawaii!

If you can't afford that then I second going to Colorado for some fun at a
resort. You can be active AND hang out by the pool. Gorgeous scenery
and lots do to. (Okay I'm envious writing this right now.) ;)

Have fun!

Since you are in CA, I vote for Hawaii. It's no different from going to the east coast for you, and there is no hurricane season there.

We booked an all inclusive via cheapcarribean.com in the DR. It was silly cheap, and once you had paid for the first 3 nights, was only $20 extra per person per night. We took our infant as a lap baby, so there were no extra costs associated with that, there were a variety of eating options, including beachside, poolside, buffet, and proper dining. There was a kids club, which we didn't make use of, staff were wonderful, and off site excursions were inexpensive.

Don't write it off entirely.

San Diego Area is great. La Costa or Paradise Point. Hotel Del is also fun and you walk or ride bikes everywhere. We went to Nuevo Vallarta last summer in June, and while it was really hot, it was still fun. Sayulita is close to there and a cute little village. You would fly into Puerto Vallarta.
Good Luck

what is your budget?

You can get an all inclusive resort - Dominican Republic - Punta Cana. Go for an older resort as they have the nicer beaches.

There is DisneyWorld in Florida - I believe you can get an all inclusive there as well.

Talk with a travel agent and tell them what your family likes to do and what you are trying to spend....You might find a cruise package...you might find a deal that you didn't know about!

Good luck! Have fun!
