Unique Christening Gift

I've been asked to be the godmother to a friend's new baby. I'm not very religious, but said yes because it seemed important to her. Now I'm struggling with what to give as a gift for the baby. Is there anything special I'm supposed to provide for the Christening? She already has the gown. If anyone has any suggestions for a unique gift, please help!

I've bought both my Goddaughters Precious Moments Bibles that have their names inscribed on them. You can order them at Personal Creations.com - I think they're around $40.

C., I was in a very similar situation last year. I ended up buying a beautiful ceramic cross (to be hung in he baby's room). It was personalized and painted. It was gorgeous. It cost about $45.00. I bought it at a baby "boutique" store called "Beautiful Beginnnings". They are located in Western Springs. There is also another location in Lincoln Park in Chicago.

I also enclosed a check in the card.

Your best bet is to look for something that has "keepsake" quality...something that can be dated or personalized with the baby's name.

Good luck!

Hi C.-
I was asked to be my neighbors god mother (my husband is the god father) last year and I found the perfect gift ... My God daughter is a girl so I got her a pearl necklace with 1 pearl and I give her another pearl for her birthday every year so by the time she is 18 she will have a beautiful and real pearl necklace...I spaced the pearls because I dont like full pearl necklaces so you will be able to see part of the chain... Then we got her a savings bond...
Good luck..If youneed the jeweler name please email me...

Something personalized is nice. I am a Godmother and got my Godaughter a personalized picture frame that had a prayer with it along with the date. Check out Poetrygifts.com. It is a nice keepsake and they can put a picture of the baby from the Christening day in it.

Hi C.,

Think about a Savings Bond in the baby's name. It will be appreciated by the mom and dad and ofcourse your new godchild when he/she turns 18! I received bonds at my children's Christening and it is a wonderful and thoughtful gift!

Enjoy your new godchild.

I would highly recommend getting her a small childs gold cross on a chain or a Saints medal. You can find them for around $60. If you go gold-filled, it's much less. Or you can buy her a christening pin. Gold around $90-100 and gold filled around $30. Or you could get a nice silver cross and have it engraved for her room. Do a google/froogle (or head to local jewelers) search on the jewerly. Last summer we got my godson and my husbands godaughter small gold cross on chain. My twinkies received saints medal on chain from god parents and pin from grandparents. The pin is nice cause then you can also pin it to their bedding. Good luck!

Things Remembered (and other stores) sell great shadow box frames that you can engrave and the parents can fill with the items given at the church. We have given that with a savings bond in the past.
