UTI During and After Pregnancy

I had UTI's the last half of my pregnancy and was on a low dose of Macrobid to keep it from coming back. I even got one while on the Macrobid. My baby is almost 4 months old now and I am still having UTI's. I have had 3 of them now. I had a kidney scan 2 months ago and they found a spot on my right kidney that they said was a birth defect and that it was aggravated by the pregnancy and that it would get better on its own. Has anyone else had this problem? How long did it take to get better?

What can I do next?

Have you ever used D-Mannose? You can get capsules at the health food store; it alters the environment of the urinary tract so that bacteria have a difficult time "sticking."

Cherries, blueberries and cranberries all have a enzyme that will stop bacteria from attaching to the lining in your bladder. Try including one of them in your diet daily. For instance, toss a handful of frozen blueberries in your morning bowl of cereal. You can also drink the juice but make sure its real juice and not a juice drink. Also juice is higher in calories than the fruit.

Not to freak you out, but one of the first signs of bladder cancer (which in its early stages is totally treatable) is persistent elevated white cells in your urine, which looks like a UTI on lab results. Are you having the burning/urgency symptoms, or are your urine dips coming up positive, without symptoms? (My grandma has been diagnosed with bladder cancer after ten years of almost constant UTIs, so we've done a lot of research about bladder cancer recently. They looked at my grandma's kidneys first, too, and even removed one, and only after that found that the cancer originated in the bladder.) Talk w/your doctor, it might be time to have somebody take a look at your bladder (they can look at it through a scope, rather than a scan.) At the very least, it sounds like it's time to meet w/a urologist. I know it seems like a low-grade minor thing, and it probably is, but be persistent until you get answers you trust.

I had recurrent UTI's during both of my first pregnancies, for my 3rd I drank 1/4 c. of Apple Cider Vinegar in 3/4 c water everyday. I never had a UTI w/ #3 and I haven't had one since. Try it, it's nasty but worth it.
