Washing the Kitchen Floor

I have a large white ceramic tile floor with a glossy finish. I really don't care for it at all, but do not have the option of replacing it. I use a swiffer vac every day for crumbs and dog hair, but I'm looking for advice on washing the floor. I have used the swiffer wet cloths, and they work okay, but I'd like to switch to something more "green" and to use fewer chemicals around my kids. I do NOT want to spend a lot of money on fancy products! I tried a little vinegar and water with a sponge mop today, and it cleaned the floor well, but left lots of big streaky blotches and water marks. It looks terrible! Is there something else safe I can use without spending a fortune, that will not leave streaks? Has anyone tried a shark floor steamer? I'd consider investing the $80 in that if I knew it worked, but does it have to be used with a chemical solution?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you very much for all of the great ideas. I think I just left the floor too wet. But thanks to your suggestions, I'm planning to start making my own products at home, and I'd like to share a great website I found: http://healthychild.org/resources/article/make_your_own_h... It has easy and inexpensive solutions for safe cleaners you can make yourself, mostly using vinegar and baking soda. I'm looking forward to making the switch!

I use the swiffer wet jet, but instead of their solution, I use a spray bottle with Shaklee's all purpose cleaner. It's green, inexpensive (around $12 for a 16oz bottle of concentrate, I think, and mine has lasted 2 years), and it's safe around children and pets. I really love it.

I also have something similar to a shark that is just a steam cleaner and uses only water, no chemical at all.
either way should work great, but my husband is the only one who has used the shark like thing we have. I find it to be a hassle to deal with the water. With the Shaklee cleaner, I just take my spray bottle, spray some cleaner on the floor, and then use the swiffer mop (I'm sure any kind of mop would work, but I already had the swiffer one and like how it works) to wipe it up.

I have been using the vinegar/water to clean all of my floors. I have ceramic tile, and pergo. If you want to try vinegar on your floors, use 1/2 cup white vinegar mixed in 1 gallon (3.8 liters) warm water. I put it in a spray bottle and use a wood floor mop. The trick is to not use too much on your floor. If done right, you should have great results. I have started using this mixture for everything. It's great for the glass on your windows, window blinds.
Good luck!

Good idea to switch to something safer for your family. Kids are on the floor all the time- eating things off the floor, crawling around and then putting their hands with cleaner residue in their mouths. I've found the Basic H2 from Shaklee to be a great all-around cleaner (you mix different concentrations for windows, floors, and as a degreaser or all-around cleaner). It's such a great deal since it's all concentrated and a little goes a LONG way. It will easily last you a year or more. Here's the link- http://www.shaklee.net/tammybristol/product/00015.

Happy Green Cleaning!

Hi J.!

I use vinegar to clean EVERYTHING! lol What I do to avoid the streaks on my hardwood laminate floors and my bathroom tiles is use the vinegar diluted with water and put in a spray bottle. I spray and then mop it up with a clean slightly damp mop. I was having the same problem with streaking and my hubby pointed out that I am leaving the floors too wet so changing how I use it has done wonders... I am too lazy to get on the floors with a towel to dry afterwards so this has worked for me!

Good luck and blessings to you!

I have a Bissell steamer and I really like it. I mop my floors once a week with Lysol or Mr Clean but use the steamer the other days, I have 4 kids so cleaning the floor is an everyday thing. I do not use any chemicals with my steamer. I got it through HSN and it came with 4 pads that are easily washed. I know the Shark is not available at department stores but not sure what pas it comes with. Make sure you check that out.

I saw an advertisement today for Clorox Green Works. It looks like they may have an all purpose cleaner you can use to clean your floors. I am going to try this. I have the same problem with my bathroom tile and I always get streaks. Good luck!
