I recently had my 3rd child and gained about 40lbs from the pregnancy. This summer I have to stand up in a wedding and I need to lose the weight to fit into my dress. My daughter is strictly breastfed. I need advice on how to lose the weight without affecting my breastmilk. Can anyone help?

What can I do next?

Do not diet...unless you want to loose your milk or risk malnourishing your baby. Eat healthy and exercise...the baby weight should melt right off with the nursing.

I just (11 months ago) had my 4th so I know exactly what you are going through. My suggestion, obviously don't diet...at least not while breastfeeding but this doesn't mean you can't lose weight. Try taking out soda or caffeine (if you drink it) and replace it with water. It takes 30 days to break a habit. This does help ya lose weight. You can try walking around a bit, I know right now it is cold but if you stairs go up and down those for a bit. Once it gets warmer a walk or two around the block every day could help. Eating healthier and smaller meals is something the doctor has always told me as well. Good luck!

A good way to lose weight but not interfere with your breastmilk, is add grapefruit or grapefruit juice to every meal, and there is a specific diet that the cardiologist give to patients before having heart surgery, where for breakfast you eat bacon and eggs grapefruit or juice for lunch any meat as much as you want, and veg, and lettuce salad with any dressing, and grapefruit or juice and dinner same as lunch, any meat any veg. lettuce salad, and grapefruit, the acid in the grapefruit burns the calories, my husband and I went on this diet, and lost alot of weight, the only thing you cannot eat is breads, potatoes, rice, basically just starches. and walking everyday helps alot besides helping to lose weight it makes you feel alot better, and if you push the baby in a stroller when you walk, that is extra exercise you get in. Hope this helps.

You have to remember that dieting is never the answer to loosing weight. I always watch what I eat and limit myself to one or two treats a week. I also make sure that I pop in an exercise tape two to three times a week. After my fourth child these things are what I have done to loose and maintain. NEVER get on the scale, just go by the way your clothes fit. Will power is huge factor but you have to ask yourself is weighing less worth that Blizzard or piece of cake when you already had one that week. Dont deprive yourself just limit things.

I am now breastfeeding my third child (10 mos). I finally figured out that it really doesn't require that many extra calories to breastfeed. I am doing Weight Watchers and they help you to know a safe amount of calories to consume and lose weight. You get extra "points" if you are a breastfeeding mom. Remember to drink lots of water and feed her consistently to keep your milk up. You might not lose all 40 lbs by the wedding, but you could easily drop 15. I say any progress is great while you are breastfeeding b/c personally I want to eat everything in sight!!!

I belong to Weight Watchers. It meets in Clay Center at the Evangelical Covenant church on Tues. evenings from 6-6:30pm. Our leader is a new nursing mother. She is a life time member and has lost over 60 pounds in her new eating style. i have lost 22 pounds since October. I work in Clay so I stay in town until after the meeting on Tues. There is another lady from Wakefield that just joined and you maybe can catch a ride. Each day is a new day. Don't give up.

This worked for me after I had my 3rd child, I gained 40 pounds too!
www.transitionslifestyle.com
It is based on eating the low-glycemic way, basically eliminating the foods that effect your blood sugar levels the most. It's what nutri-system uses, but only you have to BUY their food to lose weight, Transitions teaches you how to eat!
The system burns fat, not muscle. Muscle dictates metabolism,
you will lose inches and contoures the body.

Weight watchers! I lost 60 lbs in 2006, I am 35 weeks pregnant and as soon as the doctor clears me postpartum I am back. I am also planning on breastfeeding and they have a great program for nursing moms. Maybe I will see you at a local meeting :)

With my second pregnancy, I gained 35 pounds and was not getting back my body and losing baby weight while breastfeeding. Some friend suggested mummy magic weight loss tea. I started the tea three times a day before each meal timing and shed all my extra pounds within a couple of months.

Check out Kellymom.com it's a great resource. You can't lose too much per week or else the fat you burn will release toxins into your milk that can effect your baby. Best way to lose weight is to eat healthy, control your portion size, and exercise. You can't really "diet," you still need 300-500 extra calories per day. Here's some info: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-weightloss.html

Remember, don't be too h*** o* yourself about losing the weight. I gained 60+ lbs while preggo. It takes you 9 months to put on the weight, it can take at least that long (or longer) to lose it all. The good news is that breastfeeding alone burns a lot of calories and will help you lose weight.
