Weird ?= Baby's Booty Stinks

I know this probably sounds weird, but my son's booty stinks. I don't think its gas either. It's just so many times he'll smell poopy and I'll take his diaper off and there's nothing there. He's a clean, breastfed, cloth-diapered, happy 6mo old. I was just wondering if it is normal to smell so stinky all day before he poos? I've been a nanny and worked with lots of babies, but I don't remember any ever smelling like this.

What can I do next?

J.,

I remember that my son had the same thing. He'd stink for like an hour before he'd actually poop in his diaper. My husband was forever laughing at me because I'd be doing the butt sniff test, and the pull the diaper way out test to see if there was a deposit in his diaper.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

Hey J.,
I bet it is either the diapers or the wraps. We also use cloth diapers and sometimes the wraps get smelly. I usually wash mine in an extended hot cycle with a little bit of soap. Also, just a hot extended rinse sometimes will strip the smell. I don't know about how to clean the diapers because we use a service, but I do know if you are using a cream that has fish oil base (like A&D, the Original Desitin, or Butt Paste) they can leave a fishy smell. So try switching to desitin creamy or something that doesn't have fish oil. Good luck! L

I wonder if he could be lactose intolerant (to the milk you drink, if he's nursing). Maybe try cutting back on milk for a week or two to see if that helps?

I would suspect the diapers. If you get detergent buildup they will start stinking as soon as they get wet.
Strip your diapers (hot HOT washes w/o detergent until no more soap bubbles in washer) and see if it gets better.

Could it be the cloth-diaper? I have heard that they can keep the poopy smell.

I really think it's gas. (Silent but deadly!) One of my boys was and is the same way. I found myself checking his diaper CONSTANTLY because of the stink. Now we know the stink is just the early warning system before the diaper gets loaded!

I would second the "it's probably gas" response. My son is nearing 3 months is solely breastfed and his number of poops has dramatically decreased to 1 per day or every 2 days. When he goes 2 days now it seems like he is farting all day long before he finally poops (sometimes I hear them and sometimes I just go near him where he's surrounded by a stinky cloud). His farts at this time smell worse than his poop which smells like buttered popcorn.
