If you could sugget one book that has helped you feel more confident and worthy as a mom and wife and most importantly a person what would it be. I am not a real religious person, I mean I have my own beliefs so I am not looking for advise like that. I would just like a good book that I can read to give me ideas of how to feel better about myself, so that I can get rid of the negative self talk that has been going through my mind. TIA. K.

I would suggest "A New Earth" by Eckart Tolle - you may have heard of it - it is in Oprah's book club. He also wrote "The Power of Now". I read both and I actually prefer A New Earth - I think it is more accessible, but both are great at directly addressing negative thoughts and accompanying emotions. You can also sign up for the summer Tolle class on line at oprah.com - I believe it starts this coming Monday. They have live webcasts of the author and Oprah discussing points in the book. On-line there is also a workbook with exercises that really help you deconstruct your own thought processes. It has helped me realize a lot of negativity that I hold inside and help me release it. Good luck and I would love to hear an update.

Total Woman by Marabel Morgan and Created to be His Helpmeet by Debi Pearl are two books that have totally changed my life as a mom and wife. Total Woman is an old book but a great one. My MIL cleaned out her closet and gave it to me and I've read it over and over. Created to be His Helpmeet is a Christian book but it is worth reading with some great principles you may find encouraging. You can get it from their website, www.NoGreaterJoy.org. She is a little "forward" but I like that kind of book. Two other books that are great too are the two books by Joel Osteen called Your Best Life Now~ and Become a Better You. He is a Pastor but they are still good, no matter what your background is.

I love to read and I've read a lot of "motivational" or help books and they've really changed my life...Good luck to you!

I don't really have books to recommend (although the ones by Vicki Iovine and Jenny McCarthy are written so humourously, at a time I really needed to read such a thing), and Marie Osmond's book made me identify that I had postpartum depression), but my best suggestion is to make contact with other moms. You will find you are NOT ALONE in these feelings. Women can be GREAT support for one another.

There's a website that is more about living frugally and saving money - many are SAHMs, but all are more than welcome. Even though the site is based on saving money, the forum's members talk a lot about what you are feeling. If you post there, I believe you will get a lot of support and me too's. It's at Mommysavers.com. You may have seen it on Channel 3 a couple of times. Kim Danger, the founder, is the author of 1000 Baby Bargains.

The Secret - though I recommend watching the video first, then reading the book. The video is about 1.5 hours long and as a mom of 3 kids your time I'm sure is limited. Also, you can watch it with the kids around so they can 'absorb' some of the positive information in it. The book has some additional information that isn't in the video but is done in the same format of the video and I just think it is easier to follow after knowing the format.

Hope that helps!!!

Dear K.,

My favorite book besides the Scriptures is the one I call "my other Bible," because every time I read it, my self-esteem comes back to a great degree. It's an oldie called Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. I'm sure you can get it at any library or used book store. It is very old but timeless in it's knowledge and advice and things to mentally practice.
God bless you and yours.

Woman Power and The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands and Marriage by Dr. Laura Schlessinger. If you take these to heart I don't see how you could find time for negative thoughts (or at least ones that don't stick around long). Best Life! -M-

The best way to feel better about yourself is to "do" for others. When you make a difference in other people's lives, you get the best return. If you are looking for the best way to treat your husband, read "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" by Dr. Laura Schlessinger. It will transform your marriage like nothing else you have ever experienced. Then making sure your kids know how precious they are, and putting their needs before your own, will give you years of return! The fact that you lined up your work with their schedule so you can have time with them when they are not in school is awesome! A lot of moms find ways to not have to be their kids. Enjoy these times with them! You sound like a hero to me.

Hi K.,
I would suggest any book by Marianne Williamson. The one I just read is called "A Woman's Worth". It is great for really taking a look at how to love yourself. If you would like practical practice in learning to move your thoughts through without getting "stuck" in them, I offer weekly classes called "Conscious Workouts", that combine exercises for being more in sync in your body and mind. We not only focus on whole body exercise for your muscles, joints and bones, but also how you can let thoughts move through and value your emotions without letting them control you. Check out my class schedule on www.consciousworkouts.com Thanks,
M. B.

I would suggest "Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy" by Sarah Ban Breathnach. It has a page or so to read daily and it's excellent. It's not a religious book, in fact I get the impression that there is a little Christian, a little Jewish and maybe some other "stuff" in her background and she doesn't push anything. I actually read this book for more than two years in a row and found it quite helpful. She has other books available too. Good luck, K.

Hey, K..

It can be really tough being a mom and wife. I have a book that changed my life, but it isn't necessarily about being a mom or wife--just a person. It's called Self-Esteem, and it's by Matthew McKay and Patrick Fanning. It deals directly with that little voice in your head that chimes in and tells you negative stuff about yourself.

There are used copies at Amazon for $5.40 plus shipping. Here's a link:

http://www.amazon.com/Self-Esteem-Cognitive-Techniques-As...

It has an obnoxious name, but it really has changed my life in so many ways. It helped me identify that the negative self-talk had to stop and then gave me ways to do it. It's a habit, and it's not hard to break. You can reprogram yourself to be a friend to yourself, instead of an enemy.

Good luck, and I hope you find what you're looking for. It's great that you're looking to make it better! You're doing a very hard thing, and I'm sure you'll find what you need. Don't give up until it's better though--you don't have to live with it.

Take care!

K.,
The last book that I just finished was The Last Lecture. Amazing book that he wrote for his children.
Before that I just did the Oprah's book club book A New Earth. It is amazing!!!
I recommend that you either watch or reading the Secret, they both with let you know that your thoughts attact what you want!
Then if you want to achieve a few things Read the Success Principles by Jack Canfield. He is the author of chicken Soup of the Soul.

I read for 30 min every day. I found that it is important to consistantly fill myself with positive infomation and give myself tools to live life. My children and husband need me to do that!!

Hope that this helps :)
