MY 3 month old has Thrush! I am breastfeeding twins, and am afraid of the other getting it too. Doc recommends Nystatin. I 've read many differing results. Anyone with experience dealing with this?? Advice needed.

What can I do next?

I'm a big fan of probiotics for treating candida (yeast, thrush) myself, but I'm not sure how they would be given to a baby. Maybe get the children's version that is a powder and put it in your little one's mouth directly (my girls tell me it tastes quite good and I agree). At least make sure you are taking good doses of probiotics to ward off getting it yourself.
Ultimately what you need to treat is candida which is what causes thrush and there's plenty of ways to do it. Check it out on the web or if you want a LOT more info on candida check out a book called "The Yeast Connection."

My son got thrush after a few rounds of antibiotics... the Nystatin worked great, cleared it up in a few days. I don't believe the other twin can get it as it's just a yeast infection of the mouth *somebody correct me if I'm wrong*. Good luck, hoping it clears up quickly for your little one.

My daughter and I both had thrush - undiagnosed for so long that I actually had to stop breast-feeding her when it had gone on for so long that it could not be cured unless nipple to mouth contact ceased.
Thrush is a very common in infants, and is caused by an overgrowth of the bacteria in the mouth - it is a yeast infection of the mouth essentially. She may have white lesions in her mouth, but in infants, it may also just look like a white coating of the tongue/roof of mouth/insides of cheeks. I never saw any visible lesions in my babies mouth and she never seemed "bothered" by it, but then again, she was a fussy baby already because of early diagnosed acid reflux (funny, they never mentioned it looked like thrush in her mouth!).
Take her to the pediatrician, and he can give you a prescription for a medicine called Nystasin- its a cream, and will get rid of the babies thrush. My little one had a pretty severe case, but it cleared up within a couple of days using the medicine. Many of my friends had have the same experiences with thrush and treating it with Nystasin - its pretty much the safest go to non-toxic quick cure.
As for you, YOU need to talk to either your OB or your primary care if you suspect you have thrush. I had no idea that "we" had it - since my daughter was exclusively breastfed, I just assumed that the whiteness of her tongue and inside of her mouth was because of all the milk she was receiving. But then, my nipples started to become VERY sore all of a sudden, after I had been breastfeeding for 4 months - they started to crack and eventually bleed. When the baby would spit up after a feeding, I was noticing that her spit up was tinged with brown from the blood getting into her tummy from my nipple. I tried pumping only, and that made it worse, so it was actually my symptoms that led to our diagnosis. It took a LONG TIME for my thrush to go away - I used the Nystasin on my nipples, but it did not cure my case. I ended up taking the oral medication Diflucan - it is a single dose pill that works in one day (used for yeast infections of the below the belt variety). Unfortunately, I had let it go for so long by then that I had all but stopped nursing the baby because I was in such discomfort.
Its a SIMPLE thing to cure, just talk to your doctor soon if you suspect your child has passed it to you.

Thrush is contagious. My daughter got it because she needed steriods and it depleted her of probiotics. Then I got it too. It is very painful for both, so baby #2 can get it. Do use the Nystatin for the baby and put some on your nipples too until it is cleared up. This will heal it for you if you get it and keep the other baby from getting it. Check at the healthfood store for something with the word violet in it. Tell them what you need it for and they will know. This too can be put on the breasts without hurthing the babies. Probiotics are easily and safely given to the baby. As suggested get the powder form for kids. Dip your finger in and put it on their tongues just before nursing. I do this with all my kids as they all have food allergies and it helps them digest.
What a great blessing to have twins. I look back and wish I had been blessed with twins. But God has blessed me with 7 beautiful children from 13 yrs. - 7 mths. I am a SAHM and homeschooler.
Blessings to your family.
