What to Do with a 3 Yr. Old with a Possible Yeast Infecton?

My daughter has had what seems to be diaper rash down there, but she doesn't wear diapers, so I'm suspicious. She's complained of itching for about 4-5 days...we've tried various ointments but it doesn't seem to be getting better. Her entire area is red, inside and out. Normally, I'd take her to the doctor right away, but with the flu scare, I'm a bit anxious to take her in to a germ-filled waiting room for such a minor issue. Has anyone had a similar experience with their toddlers? Any advice? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My daughter had this problem too. Her pediatrician told me to use Lotrimin, which is for athlete's foot & jock itch. She told me that regular diaper cream will not work on this type of rash, that it's a type of fungus. I remember how horrible that rash was & I felt so bad for her. It would periodically come back but just go back to the Lotrimin & it really does work.

My daughter used to get yeast infections from antibiotics she was taking, even some foods cause it! My doctor told me to use Monistate 3 or any yeast infection cream (JUST THE CREAM ON THE EXTERIOR) where the rash is, it really worked well!

Good Morning. She may be having a reaction to her soap and/or toilet paper. Is she wearing 100% cotton undies. I grew up with very sensitive skin and I had to have special clothes made out of 100% cotton or I was a walking rash.
Have her take an oatmeal bath (not too hot). I had to do that about 3 times a week and it really helped with the discomfort.

I would keep her out of the dr's as long as you can. My dr allows us to take my daughter into a different door so we don't have to be around so many people. She has asthma so she is real sensitive to germs. Maybe you can call and ask if there is a seperate door that you can use since she doesn't have flu symptoms but she needs to be seen. On a woman/girl there is nothing worse than having anything going on down there.

Good Luck

J....First you may want to put her on a good probiotic which helps the good bacteria which has been minimized by the infection and if she isn't already on a good kids vitamin and vitamin c that would be very important for her immune system as well. Second keep her off sugar which feeds the yeast. I can help you in this process as I am in the health and wellness industry and Shaklee is the company I work with. Please do your research because everything out there is not made in kids' best interest. We are all natural and our probiotic is the only one that guarentees to work where you need it to work. Did she just finish a round of antibiotics for something? Lots of kids get yeast infections (or thrush in babies) after a round of meds for things like ear infections. You should always give probiotics during a round of antibiotics.

Get a zinc-based ointment and call the doc if it doesn't get better after a couple days.

First have you changed laundry soaps or bath soaps ? I could be a allergic reaction to change's in one of those. Or it could be that your child has been pleasuring herself which is normal but to get red and sore and itchy I would think it is a infection and really should be seen by her Doctor.Don't freak out about the flu scare, hand washing and keeping your hands away from your face and mouth can keep you healthy along with blowing your nose every day and drinking warm beverages. It takes about 3 days for the flu virus to attack after being exposed.

Sounds like yeast which is pesky to get rid of. Need some Nystatin which is a script.

It could be the way she wipes.. but I would check with your ped.

please call your doctor now. You are just as likely to get the flu from a shopping cart at the grocery store.

IF it is a yeast infection then yogurt with live cultures should help.

Does she go to day care or is she home with you all day? If the above doesn't work, just to be safe, I'd take her to the doctor. She seems awfully young to get a yeast infection - unless she's on antibiotics.

J.,

I hope you find this information helpful. With 3 girls, there's been our share of rashes!

First, to avoid further irritation, be sure to use a mild/senstive/fragrance-free wash. I'm partial to Arbonne's ABC baby line, but whatever your pediatrician would recommend would be good. The diaper rash cream is awesome! I use it even on my 7 and 10 yr olds with anything that is red. As long as it isn't a recurrence, that usually does the trick.

Also, avoid bubble bath products. They are tend to make the problem worse.

You should be able to call in to the Dr.'s office and speak with a nurse to describe what's happening. They might recommend an OTC and then check-in with them later if it hasn't cleared.

I've use lotrimin (which may even be for males) which has helped. You may want to wash her bottom and dry thoroughly whenever she goes potty. It's a pain, but that has also helped clear up any issues.

Good luck and let me know if you've found any of this helpful.

Call your pediatrician - they'll probably either make a recommendation over the phone or suggest you bring her in for verification of what type of infection it is. The last thing you want to do is "guess" and use a medication for a problem that is something different.

I agree with the person who said you're just as likely to get the flu from a shopping cart. Everything we touch (door handles, etc) is possibly infected.

Good luck.

Call your doctor! It may seem minor now but if left untreated it could get alot worse in a short period of time.

As for the flu scare... our ped office hands everyone a mask as soon as they walk in the door. The kids with no flu symptoms are whisked away to a 'well room' almost immediately. No one with flu symptoms are allowed in that room.

And even if she does get the flu, it's no more deadly or worse than the typical seasonal flu strains we have -- but those don't make the news, the media is only focusing on the h1n1 making the rounds right now trying to scare everyone to death. My young kids just had the h1n1 and it was just a typical flu thing... 48 hours of fever and coughing and then it went away on it's own. Many of our friends have had it as well and that is pretty much the common story.

The best advice this old granny can give is to wash her fairly often with mild non fragrance soap and make sure she is completely dry. I always used plain Vaseline but I am sure there are other ointments now days on the market. A&D ointment is a good one too.

Kids can get yeast infections for a variety of reasons, and my 3 year old still gets them too.

The way we've always treated them (based on what we were told from the Dr.'s office) was to use Lotrimin (look in the "athlete's foot" section of the pharmacy"), and Bag Balm (in a green tin usually near the lotion aisle). (We've taken to calling Bag Balm "Booty Balm".)

call the doctor or pharmacist. Yeast infection or urinary tract infections can be extremely painful. Maybe they can call in something or set up a time you could get right in without waiting in the waiting area.

If she has been on antibiotics lately that could cause that. Also, my niece had basically the same thing and yes, she did have to go to the doctor to get medication, we had to boil her underware and for a while we had to wash them completely seperately from any socks and we had to use dreft. Also, when we boiled the underware we used clorox 2 (can't remember if we HAD to use that) and rinsed them extremely well before drying. We totally seperated underware from the rest of the wash and the doctor believe it was from her playing (sitting) in the bath water. Also, when I first noticed it; we used cornstarch on her until we could get her to the doctor - it did seem to help and also, you might try diaper rash ointment. After her baths we let her run around inside with a long shirt on and no underware for a little bit. If you're worried about the flu at the doctors office, you could wear a mask on her and you for that matter.

AT least talk to your doctor over the phone to discuss possible OTC meds or a prescription he can call in for you. Maybe it is a urinary and a yeast infection. You definitely do not want to levave it untreated. Try increasing your child's yogurt and avoid foods that have sugar or breads. Avoid juices and increase water.

My four year old is having same issue right now, after a week of antibiotic (my fault, i was busy and forgot to follow up with probiotics). We called the doc and they recommended lotrimin. I've also started her on Children's Acidophilus.

I agree with the other responses on giving her yogurtalso you might try putting vaseline on here there and sprinkling cornstarch in her panties. Does she take bubble baths or a lot of baths maybe sprinkle baking soda in her bath water, and also watch the bubble baths they are known to cause infections if she only takes baths the soap is probably irritating her also try to get her to drink some water. Hope this helps, J.

Hi, J.! I would think that if you tried the Lotramin ointments and it's not going away, it's probably not a yeast infection. Honestly, a yeast infection was my first thought. On the other hand, is it possible that she isn't wiping well enough after she uses the potty? She may be sore from urine sitting on her skin. Maybe you can encourage her to use a baby wipe to clean herself off, then dry herself with TP. Also, be sure that she isn't wiping towards her front after she has a BM. That can be very irritating to her skin. I would bathe her every night to be sure that she's nice and clean. If it's really sore, maybe even put a little diaper rash cream on her to help take some of the redness away. If it persists, I would definitely give the doctor a call and see if they have any suggestions.
