Where to Deliver Second Child

My insurance covers Baptist Womens Hospital and St. Francis on Park Ave. and since I delivered my first in CA, I'm not sure which would be better. I've already toured both facilities. St. Francis seemed friendlier, but Baptist is newer.

What can I do next?

As if it's not clear already, Baptist is the better choice. I've had two children at Baptist, one at women's and one b/f they had the women's. The rooms are large, private and updated the staff is more than attentive.

I had a friend who had her baby at St. Francis. She said it was the worst experience of her life. The staff was rude and unattentive. I remember the rooms being small and run down. There was barely enough room for her and her husband, much less visitors.

I work at Baptist hosp and know some of the nurses who work at Baptist Women's hosp labor/delivery. They are great. I think you would have a great experience there. The facility is very new and the nurses seem to love what they do. I also know a nurse who works at St Francis labor/delivery and loves it over there too. Go with your gut feeling. Both facilities are nice.
Good luck!

L., have you ever considered a home birth w/a midwife, I've used the midwife twice, as well as my neighbor and friend, and I would not hesitate to use her for my third (if there is a third!) Just a thought, I know it's not for everyone. As well, she does take insurance, and it is A LOT cheaper than what you are going to be out of pocket at the end.

Hi L.:

I would highly recommend that you deliver at Baptist Women's Hospital. St. Francis has come a long way but they are known to be a charity hospital so services provided are not as great as you would get at Baptist Woman's or Germantown Methodist. Two friend's of mine delivered their baby there (at St. Francis) and have described the experience as "Neanderthal" There is nothing wrong with St. Francis if you're going there for any other medical issues (my father in law had eye surgery there and did just fine) but for delivery, I HIGHLY recommend Baptist over St. Francis. St. Francis will cost you less out of pocket but there is a reason for that.

Both Baptist Women's and Germantown Methodist treat you like a pampered princess! Who doesn't need that kind of treatment when they've endured hours of labor! :-)

Best of luck!

i delivered my first child(now 51/2)at baptist east before the women's center was there, and my second child (22months)at baptist women's and i had a good experience both times. actually i am a nurse at st. francis on park, and know it is older but i don't know anyone who has delivered there. also, if your insurance covers it, i've heard st. francis in bartlett is really nice since it's new too. from my experience, i would probably go with baptist women's if you're given the 2 choices.

I delivered both our children at Baptist Women's Hospital and had a good experience both times. There was one nurse each time who could have been nicer, but the other nurses MORE than made up for those two. I was treated very well overall and received wonderful help with pain management, breastfeeding, food, etc. My babies were both handle well and they have very reassuring safety precautions in place. I can't compare your choices, but I would deliver at Baptist again tomorrow if I were in your position! Hope this helps!

I believe you should go to Baptist Woman's. I delivered my first child at Baptist East before it was built. I had my second child at The Med. It was the worest experience I ever had. My last child was born at Baptist Woman's min January 07. It was so wonderful! They treated me so good! I ended up having an emercacy c-section. They rushed me so fast. The after care was wonderful! Since it was my first c-section they made sure I was comfortable all day and night. I went home bout 2 1/2 days after I had him.

L., I am sure by now you are considering Baptist with all of the positive responses. But I'd like to suggest that you look at St. Francis in Bartlett, if that isn't too far from your home. It is operated by the same company as the St. Francis on Park Ave., so your insurance should work there, too.

St. Francis- Bartlett is the newest hospital around, so the facility is clean and up-to-date. I am due with my first child at the end of September and will be having my baby there. I have had a few same-day surgeries there, and the staff was very attentive & friendly. They also have a lot of security measures in place in the Labor & Delivery department to ensure that no one can come in who doesn't belong there.

I have a lot of family members who are in the medical field who have told me that Baptist operates under some of the highest nurse-to-patient ratios around, which means that there are fewer nurses per patient than other local hospitals such as Methodist or St. Francis. Note that this is word of mouth from other nurses & medical staff.

Good luck to you regardless of which hospital you choose!!

L.,
I had my second child at Baptist Womens Hospital, my first was born in NY. I really liked Baptist, I don't know anything about St. Francis. The nurses at Baptist were great and the LC was great too in case you plan on nursing. You get a private room for recovery, it is really nice.

I delivered my first child at St. Francis hospital and had a bad experience. They were not very attentive there. I know several people who have delivered at Baptist and had wonderful experiences.

I delivered at St. Francis almost 13 yrs ago and wasn't that impressed with the staff. I have been at the Baptist Womens and they have a great staff. The nurses are really nice and care for the patients. Baptist would be the choice staff wise.

I delivered at Baptist Womens; it was a very nice facility. I was not too impressed with some of the staff. My daughter had to stay in the NICU for the first 24 hours and those nurses were GREAT!. I do not know anything about St Francis Hospitals but I have heard good things about the St Francis in Bartlett on Hwy 64. If your insurance covers St Francis hospitals, see if you could check into that one, it is very new.

both Baptist and St. Francis are wonderful. I had my children, ages 13, 17 and 18 at Baptist with Dr. Sam Cox. Had great experiences. My sister, who son is now 18, had a 2 pound baby at Baptist and is a big healthy boy... Baptist specializes in Premies and at rish babies. St. Francis may do it too, but just havenot heard. The rooms are nice, like hotels at Baptist now that they upgraded to the women's center. But, I think you'll do great which ever you choose.

L.,

I would STRONGLY recommend delivering at Baptist. I am a RN myself (now currently staying home with my new child) and have worked at St Francis. I left when I became pregnant last year. Knowing what i do about their labor & delivery department, I would definitley say choose Baptist. i delivered my 13 year old son at Baptist and it was a wonderful experience. St Francis is very understaffed and often have to put their laboring moms in the hall ways and even downstairs in the ER.

Just my 2 cents!
Thanks-
S.
