Lessons for 4 Yr Old to Prep for Kindergarten

This school year my 4 yr old son will be home, so I want to try to homeschool him. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how. Also, do any of you have suggestions on lesson plans and scheduling his day? I am not sure what he needs to know or be able to do for Kindergarten next year. We decided to keep him out of preschool this year because he was so sick at the last place that cost an arm and a leg and we are on many waiting lists currently. We figured to just teach our son ourselves, but I am just not sure where or how to start. I...

Is This Enough to Learn Baby Sign Language?

First, thank you to everyone who gave advice about my 8 month old crying recently. That has helped a great deal. I updated that post. As some suggested, yes I have been using sign language with my baby. But he hasn't signed back after 2 months. And it is hard to get his attention especially when he is playing. I've read books on the subject. I'm using online dictionaries. I constantly use words like "eat," "more," milk," "diaper," "bath," "toy," "play," the kinds of toys he has, animals, people like mom and dad, and so on. I use them...

Lying.... Driving Me a Little Insane

My son is 6 and in the 1st grade. Lately he has been lying all the time. And when I say all the time I am by no means exaggerating. Today was one of the worst. My son had earned $3 over the weekend( he could of earned more but he slacked on his chores) which means he gets to spend $2 and put $1 in the piggy bank. This morning while I was tying his shoes he told me that he put the last $1 in his bank. Then when I picked him up from school he had a chocolate bar worth $1 that they sell in the library. Before I could even ask he tells me he ...

Single Dad Needing Help with Abc's and Numbers.

So im on mamapedia, and i'm a dad. I really need help from some of yall. I just got custody of my 4 and a half year old daughter who had been secluded by her grandparents in Montana. She has had no interaction with an adult that is willing to teach her until now. I have tried A, B, C, and D for about 10 days now and she can only tell me what A, and C are. Is this normal? I have her grab any letter she wants and then try and tell me what that letter is, and she just cries. She can be in the happiest mood before until i try and teach her what...

Seeking Moms Making Their Own "Summer camp"....what Are You Doing This Summer?

My 2 girls (3 and almost 5) are going to be home with me all summer. I'm foregoing any camps because of $$ we've spent on our house recently. My 'rough' plans for the summer: 1. Develop a theme (ladybugs, ocean, flowers) for each week. Schedule activities, meals, arts/crafts, etc., around that theme. 2. List out destinations within a 30 minute driving radius (save $$ on gas, save aggravation of long travel time with little ones!). Plan one destination every other week. My standard local activities are: library, park ...

Where to Find Puppets

I am looking for a store in the Sterling Heights/Rochester area that might sell puppets that I can use to help teach my 4 year old Sunday school class. I can't find any puppets anywhere. I have tried Lakeshore Learning (they had some but were for kids to hold -- too small for my hands), Toys R Us and the Family Christian bookstore. I was hoping to not have to buy one online. Anyone have any ideas?

Seeking a Preschool

Does anyone have any suggestions for a preschool for my son? I live in the Gilbert area and would like something fairly close. My son is almost 2 1/2 and is not potty trained yet. I am looking for a preschool for him to attend 2-3 times a week. I am looking for something that he can enjoy, have fun, and socialize with other children. I am NOT looking for a daycare. It seems like every "preschool" I look into is actually just a daycare that calls themselves a preschool. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Poor Reading Fluency (Slow)

My daughter is in 2nd grade and was tested on the TRPI as being slow/low in the area of reading fluency. She tested at a 42 wpm (words per min.) and the minimum they want to see at the 2.0 mark is 50 wpm and at the end of second grade they want 90 wpm. I was writing to ask you all some techniques/ideas/books etc. that I can work with her on to improve her reading fluency. FYI her comprehension is good and she has a 2.8 reading level. Any helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What are popular summer activities with kids

I'm sure some of you have some great ideas for summer activities that are fun and inexpensive. We do not have a pool and are on water restrictions so our outdoor activities are limited for most of the day. I'm looking for some fun things to do at home with my girls. I'd love to hear your ideas, but please do not suggest movies, video games, or computer activities. I'd like to stay away from that as much as possible. Can't wait to hear your responses.

Help Planning Daily Lessons/activties for 2 Yr. Old This Summer

I will be home with my daughter this summer - she is currently in day care part-time, but my job ends in June. I feel like I should have daily things planned for her to do - similar to what she does at day care. Music, lessons, art, etc. Any other SAHM have some sort of schedule they follow or recommendations? She is two. I'm going to put her in swim class at the Y and try to find something else for us to get involved in. My husband is adamant that I should be working with her all summer - flashcards, etc. Thanks for your help.

Things to Do Other than Watching TV

Ok, so call me crazy or unrealistic (because I know that's exactly what my husband will do), but I want to TRY to go without TV, as a household, for a full week... yes 7 full days. I have not mentioned this to him because I know the first question he will ask me is, "well, what are we going to do instead." This is so sad to me because as a family and as a society in general we have grown so dependent, if you will, on television. Lately it seems like it's gotten worse! My kids want to watch TV all day, the second my husband gets home from...
