Unmotivated 16 Year Old

My 16 year old daughter is very smart, but is very unmotivated to complete her school work, therefor seems to be running a C average in almost everything. I speak to her teachers who say she 'drifts off' in class. She often gets zeros for homework she 'does not feel like doing'. I realize a C average is not the end of the world, but I know she is capable of more and would like her to be able to go to college. I have taken away privliges, offered incentives, etc, and she says she will do better, and may for a very short time, then its back...

17 Year Old Wants to Drop Out of Track

I guess I'm not looking for advice since I know how I'm going to handle this, maybe just support that I'm doing the right thing! My 17 year old daughter (a junior)came home yesterday and said that she is dropping out of track. It's the only sport she is in. We have always taught our kids that what you start you finish. If she decides not to join the team next year I will have to go with that decision but for now, we paid the fee and most of all I want her to keep physically active. Right now she is tiny. 5'1" and 97 pounds but I have...

Advice on 15 Year Old Daughter

Hello - I need advice on what to do in a situation regarding my 15 year old daughter. She has been sneeking around behind my back to talk to and to see a boy that her dad and I have already told her we didn't want her to have any contact with anymore. The times that she sees him are few and far between because he lives about 30 minutes away but she has started talking to him recently on her cell phone and online. I have started taking her phone from her when she comes home from school because he will call her around midnight/1:00am and...

It's "Driving" Permit time---HELP!!!

My daughter is 15 and she is going to get her permit today. she wants to drive home form the DMV, I have had her out on dirt roads and she did just fine but that was 15-20 miles an hour. I dont think I am going to le ther drive home. But I will take her to get more miles under her belt on dirt roads. How do I lesson the ache on her for not getting to do what all the other teens do? Or what do other teens get to do, I only hear from her about her friends driving habits. She says all the parents let their kids drive home from the DMV? I think...

Teen Cell Phone Vs. No Cell Phone

I have yet to see something about taking a stand against cell phones. My son has been asking, actually begging me to get him one (he is 16). We have gone round and round on the issue. He poses a very good argument as do I. I need some additional insight as to why he should and should not have one. He is a “good” teen as much as I can tell but I worry about the TEXTING that gets out of control, the phone calls in the middle of the night or alone in his bedroom, who is calling and how long or often is he chatting with a girl or his...

Seeking Advice for Out of Control 16 Year Old

I am seeking advice for a 16 year old who is out of control. A little bit about our sitation - I am 31 single female (no kids)with a 16 year old sister. Our mother died over 14 years ago, so she was raised primarily by our father. Out of pity for my youngest sister, he let her grow up doing whatever she wanted - no disipline whatsoever. In total, my father father has 4 kids - we are all from the same 2 parents. During these past years, ny father did not want us coming around or trying to disipline the youngest. Now at 16, she is beyond...

Too Young to Start Pre-school?

We are expecting our second baby in July. At that time, my older daughter will be 23 months old. I have been considering enrolling her in a pre-school for a few hours each week so that I can have some time with the new baby. She would be going for 3 hours a day, 3 days each week. The school we are considering has a program that allows the parent to come to school with the child for a few weeks until the child is acclimated. I was thinking of starting this program with my daughter about 2 months before the baby is born so that she has a...

Summer Camp Ideas and Alternatives

We both work full time. DS now 6 had been going to the summer camp program at his former day care until last year. He loved it but aged out. This year we had him enrolled in a local Day camp. Light academics in the morning, the pool in the afternoon twice a week, the playground in the afternoon twice a week and a field trip every Friday. He is miserable and dreads going. The program itself seems sound, but he is lumped in with kids as old as 11 who are a little rough and tumble and a little intolerant of my son a bossy talkative 6 year...

16 Year Old Daughter

My daughter has just turned 16 in September. She is for the most part a good kid. She has her head on straight (most of the time), but loves to give me a hard time. It feels like I have lost all controll of things when it comes to her. She no longer has the respect for me she once did, and can be very disrespectful, and quite mean and hurtful. She is a sophmore in college prep highschool wich is 2 hours away from home. Last year she could not wait to go, Her brother is a senior at another high school prep school, Now this year she...

Oh Summer, Here We Are Again!

I am one of those moms who doesn't enjoy having the kids off all summer. Yes, I know, I'm terrible...But at least I'm honest. I have people telling me to cherish these days yadda..yadda...yadda.., but it's really hard to cherish constant complaints of boredom, whining, and fighting. The long summer days are not quality time in the least because I'm constantly having to discipline and get no enjoyment out of it whatsoever! It's also very difficult to find free or cheap activities that appeal to kids with a big age range. My oldest is 12...
