5 Year Old Snoring

My 5 year old son snores horribly at night. I have spoken with the peditrician numerous times and he always gives me the same answer. My son has very large adnoids (whatever they are) and he says that is the cause of the problem. Thankfully,he has never had any kind of throat issue (infections..etc) so the peditrician said there is really nothing to do about it. He told me to use a humidifer, which I have always used. When he sleeps I can actually see him struggling for air. I compare it to trying to suck something through a straw that's to...

6 Year Old Who Snores

My 6 year old daughter has snored for as long as I can remember. I took her to her Ear, Nose and Throat doctor and he recommended surgery to have her tonsils and adenoids removed. I know this is a common procedure but it still seems a little drastic to me. Are there any alternatives to surgery to help her snoring and get a better night's sleep?

How Can I Get My 6 Year Old to Stop Sucking Her Thumb?

My oldest and youngest had binkies. We just threw all of our 2 year olds binkies away and it was so easy. But now here's my 6 year old and she still sucks her thumb. I want to hear any and all advice you've got for me. She does suck it less and less but she just lost her front teeth and the dentist said she really needs to stop before her permanent ones come in. Thanks for your advice.

Behavior and Discipline for 5 Year Old Boy

I'm at the end of my rope with my almost 5 year old son. No matter what I tell him to do (stop hitting your brother; don't jump on the couch; go wash your hands for dinner, etc.)he just keeps doing what he was doing. When I ask why, he says because he wants to. Then I send him to time out, he mouths off all the way to his time out, I yell, he cries...In the end I always make him do whatever I asked him to in the first place, so its not like his behavior gets him anywhere. I've tried time outs, taking toys away, taking TV away. Nothing...

Cavities, Cavities, Cavities!

My daughter is 6 years old and has multiple cavities with each trip we make to the dentist! She has already had 2 teeth pulled; 4 fillings and needs to have 3 more. We brush twice a day, floss and fluoride rinse at bedtime; she mostly drinks milk and orange juice (she's not a big water drinker, but we also don't buy soda or other sugary drinks). She doesn't eat sweets excessively either--obviously she enjoys them (she's a kid!), but I don't buy them often and we reserve them for special occasions or as an occasional treat. I am feeling...

Huge Emergency Room Bill

Hi Moms... Last month our teenaged daughter got food poisoning from under-cooked eggs. She had the "classic" signs that led us to believe she had it. Vomiting, diahreea, severe stomach distress and nausea. The timing of when we had eaten earlier in the day seemed to fit with the timing of her symptoms. This was on a Saturday evening. Of course, NO walk-in clinics were open in our town and no doctor's offices either. I called a 24-hour nurse and told them the signs and symptoms and told them I was sure it was food poisoning and what...

Optometrist Vs. Pediatric Opthalmologist

My daughter failed her vision screening in school back in March. I took her to an optometrist who said her vision was borderline (20/40) and didn't want to prescribe glasses just yet. He said he wanted to check her vision again in 6 months, which is coming up in September. My mother has been urging me to take my daughter to a pediatric opthalmologist instead. Is there any reason to go to an opthalmologist instead of the optometrist? I find the optometrist/opthalmologist thing a little confusing. Thanks

Not Removing Wisdom Teeth, Asking Again

I asked this question last week, but for some reason, I cannot access the question on this site, so I am asking again. Anyone NOT get their child's wisdom teeth removed? Or their own for that matter? My son was due to have his removed last year and then he got a traumatic brain injury so we held off on surgery, because we didn't want him to have anesthesia while he recovered from the TBI. He is still recovering from the TBI, but doing pretty well thankfully, but I completely forgot about the wisdom tooth thing. The other day he came...

I Have Had It with My 5 Year Old!!

If you guys read my post regarding my defiant 5 year old, then you know all about the tip of the iceberg. The straw that broke the camels back: she just intentionally stepped on a brand new picture frame. (why was it on the floor? it was in the corner, blocked off by the couches, in a 'safe spot' -or so I thought- so it wouldn't get knocked over or broken before I could hang it. NO ONE has ANY business even being in that corner. It was under an end table for crying out loud). I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THIS BEHAVIOR IS COMING FROM. I...

How to Choose an Orthodontist?

Hello, My daughter has been referred by her dentist to see an orthodontist. There are so many in our area, that I don't know how to choose. The dentist did give us a few cards, but I want to make an informed choice. I don't know any one who has braces or has had them recently to ask opinions of. My question is, How do you choose an orthodontist? What questions do you ask? What are important questions to ask? Insurance aside, I want to choose the best provider for my child. I don't even know where to begin. Thanks in advance for...

What Does the Tooth Fairy at Your House Do with the Teeth?

The "tooth fairy" at my house has been saving the lost teeth collected. I get completely grossed out by teeth and have a complete fear of all things dental so I don't know why I'm saving them. But for some stupid reason I don't have the heart to throw them out. What does the tooth fairy at your house do with them?
