youth sports through the city of Houston:

Houston summer activities catalog:

I don't live in that area, so I'm not sure what other resources are there, but I'm sure that being such a large city, there are tons of things for teens to do in the summer =) I would also suggest encouraging her to volunteer somewhere. Let her pick something that interests her (animal shelter, library, etc.) and set a goal of a certain number of hours to volunteer, then if she wants to try something else after those hours are up, then let her seek out something else. It would be a great way for her to get out of the house, develop her interests and skills, prepare for getting a job in a couple years, and it looks great on college applications!
There is also dance classes or fitness classes offered by a gym or the city.
Hope this helps you out!

What types of things does your daughter like? That is the first thing to reconcile with. If you find activities that she isn't interested in then she won't want to participate.

My daughter did Girl Scouts, cheerleading, softball, volleyball, and just other outdoor active things. She also had an interest at 14 in working on cool craft things so we found some things at the local hobby stores. Find out what she likes to do and find things that will work with that!

I am not sure if you live near Sugar Land but Dulles High School hosts "WHARTON KIDS COLLEGE". It's like a day camp.
Your daughter can take one class a day or several.
Each class is 45 minutes and is on M-Th. for 2 weeks.
They offer four 2-week sessions each summer.
The list of classes offered are ENDLESS! They offer sports, academics, arts. Plenty of choices, I can never make up my mind. It is VERY well organized.

Young Chef's Academy has weekly day camps. Not super cheap but my daughter loved it. Seems to be popular. There are various locations. Google it.

Churches offer Bible Camps. They are usually very inexpensive. Even if it's not offered through your own church, you could check out churches in your area.

Those free magazines you see in restaurants, I believe it's called "HOUSTON FAMILY" lists a lot of camps and activities offered.

Our daughter always volunteers each summer at a local summer camp at her old elementary school. They hold this camp for 3 to 4 weeks each summer. It works out well cause she can assist the teachers in all types of activities, but also she ends up with new baby sitting "clients" after each session.

While at the school, she also lets them know she is available for "Back to school" set up. She has assisted teachers with getting their classrooms back in order, helping organize the teacher work room and assisted their PTA get all of the Back to school packets ready.

Right now the "Great American Bake Sale" is in full swing. Our daughter held one of these bake sales all by herself. Your daughter could organize a group. All of the money raised was sent to this organization to feed the hungry. FYI, our daughter had a great idea to include Pickles during her sale and sold so many pickles and cupcake combinations, we were amazed...

She has helped at Vacation Bible school.

The neighbors know she is the "go to kid" on the block for feeding and walking pets and watering plants, when they are out of town on vacation. One summer she had 4 sets of keys in our neighborhood and in other neighborhoods taking care of all types of things.

One year she was hired to check on the elderly mom that did not go with the family on their vacation. Our daughter would take her the newspaper and have "coffee" with the lady each morning. Then our daughter would ask if she wanted anything from the store. One night our daughter actually made a small meal for the 2 of them and had dinner with her at her home.

She is a paid Mentor for a child with anxiety issues.

We have a friend who has always had her kids come up with science experiments. They then take photos , document them and keep them in a file, so that during the school year, they can go back and pick one of their experiments to report on when the Science fair is going on. They end up with 2 versions of their projects.

Give your daughter a budget for 2 meals a week. She can make a menu, purchase the food cook the food and set the table in any way she chooses.

We also have friends that plan day trips. They allow their children to do the research, plan the days activities, print out maps and try to figure out the budget. Then the family sits down and decides how and when they will go on these trips.

Let her set up a camp in your own back yard. If you do not own the equipment, ask friends if you can borrow their stuff. It is fun to camp in your own back yard.

Have her make a "Tour" of your neighborhood. She can go and do research on the highlights of the schools, the stores, the homes, the names of the streets, creeks, bridges.. and then she can print out her tour map and a pamphlet with her information.

There are tons of things she can do to organize a neighborhood Parade for the 4th of July. Organize a play with the neighborhood kids. She could put together your family's garage sale so you all can use the money for a treat.. She can gather, price and set it all up. She could list it on Craigs list the newspaper and make signs.

Have you thought about getting her involved in volunteer opportunites? You might want to check with the United Way or Salvation Army.

If she likes volleyball or basketball then you could check the web sites of the different highschools around you for summer camps. You do not have to be going to that school - they are open to everyone and are usually less than at a sports complex.
