I'm headed out to do some christmas shopping but haven't been feelign well and my brain just isn't working. My husband asked for a gold cross necklace for our first christmas as a married couple 14 years ago. the chain broke this year and i want to get him another one. What will the sales people ask me and how much would it cost?

I'm assuming my choices are solid gold, or gold plated, and then there is the whole design like rope or herringbone? If i go solid gold and it do it for under $100?

sorry i know this is somethign i should have researched, it's just so much easier to ask real people on this site. thank you!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I don't have the old chain, i've searched and don't know what he did with it. His shirts are a 17 inch neck so i'm assuming something around 20 inches. Thanks for all the help. I"m too depressed to go out and do this today, i have no holiday spirit. i hate buying gifts. I'd happily spend the money if he was there to say what he liked. bah humbug.

You may also want to take a look at www.QVC.com and www.HSN.com. They aren't carrying as much gold as they used to because gold is expensive, but they are usually cheaper than any local places. I agree, see if you can have a jeweler fix the old chain...that will be MUCH cheaper. Good luck.

You need to know how long a chain you need to buy! See what the current length of the chain is!

Where is the chain that broke? Can it be repaired?

Take the chain with you to the store so you can get something much like it if it can't be repaired.

Gold is sold by the ounce... and it will depend on how long he would like the chain! I would suggest taking the broken chain with you and seeing what it would cost to repair the chain.

Last spring the chain on my husband's cross broke and he was devastated b/c it was given to him by his late grandmother. I suggested we go buy a new chain... no concept that it would cost us a fortune to replace the chain! It was well over $100. The jeweler was the same man who did our wedding rings and well-respected in the community so it was a valid quote. He asked to see the broken chain. With some soddering and additions, he was able to fix the broken chain for $25.

Just a thought!

Solid gold (24k) is too soft to make a chain. It would bend/break too easily and I'm not even sure they make them. 22k is better, but it's still going to be massively expensive. Gold prices have been ridiculously high for the last several years. A 14k chain or a gold plate chain you'll be able to find, but it's still won't be cheap. No doubt you'll be able to find something at a mall kiosk, but I seriously doubt how much real gold they use.
This place has some beautiful jewelry. I can only afford to look at it.
Their lowest price 22k hollow gold chain (16") starts at $300.

Believe it or not I got my chain at kmart. It is a box design so it is pretty strong. I have had it for almost three years. The necklace cost me $60 and it is 14 k gold. I like it and it is pretty sturdy. Good luck
