Christmas Ham....no Working Oven!

Hi moms...We were blessed with a small ham for Christmas but the home we live in does not have a working oven or a working fridge, (cannot get the landlord to fix them and can't afford the fight with them since we don't have "real" jobs that pay well and rent is so cheap). So, how do I make this ham for my family?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried to get the free ones on Craigslist but no luck. The good news is that this past weekend my family was blessed with a loaner fridge while we are living here and my same friend knows someone who will fix the stove for free since the repair guy owes her a small favor, (she found his wallet). So...huge blessings here and thank you all for your responses. Have a Merry Christmas!!!

Since your husband is a handyman, perhaps if he offered to fix the fridge and the oven just for the cost of the parts, your landlord might be willing to pay for the parts. The landlord would need a working oven/frig for any future tenants, too. You have some great ideas from the moms on here on how to make the ham otherwise! Have a wonderful Christmas!

What about putting it in a crock pot ? You can slice it and layer it in there. I would make a mixture of pineapple tidbits mixed with brown sugar and pour over it. It will make it so good !

Hi there, well I am not sure if you can afford to buy a roaster oven at Walmart. I bought one and I cook everything from turkey, chicken, hams, and everything that you put in a regular oven. It is very inexpensive and works wonders. Attached in the name just search it on walmarts sight. This would be a quick fix. If not do you live in the Frisco area? If so I could bake the ham for you to pick up on christmas day. We have people on mamasource helping us and I would like to give back as well. Let me know if there is anything that I can do.

Cooked my ham in a crock pot for thanksgiving, it was very tender. Just put it in there the night before on low and cook it all night long. I do most of my cooking in a crock pot due to the fact that I work and follow all of my kids athletic events. I have found out you can cook just about anything in there.

K. we bought our toaster oven at Home Depot and if I'm remembering correctly it was closer to $30 and it works perfectly! Good Luck....if you're in the McKinney area I would be glad to help you!

You have already gotten some great advice, but I signed on to suggest one of the big toaster ovens. I don't know if you can afford it, but I did without an oven for more than two years by using a microwave and a large GE toaster oven that I got for about $60. It is really large and has a bunch of settings from toast to bake and a wide range of temps. I've made everything from toast to baking whole chickens and cakes and they have all come out great. Last week the rest of my stove finally gave up on me. Luckily I had saved up enough for a new stove, but I find that I still want to cook in my toaster, it heats faster than the stove's oven and I think it uses less electricity.

I have a Kitchen Aid toaster oven that I use a LOT. My hubby thought I was crazy but he and daughter also use it a lot. I paid closer to $150 for mine but there are some cheaper brands out there as well as some coupons from Bed Bath, etc.

Also, do you have a grill? If it is a gas grill you can slow cook on that. Even if you use charcoal, it shouldn't take it too long since most hams are precooked.

The idea of slicing and heating on top of the stove is good as well.

I'm sure you'll figure out a creative way to serve your ham!

Happy holidays!

A roaster oven would be my suggestion as well. They are terrific. If that is not an option, can you slice up the ham and cook it on the stove top? Maybe wrap it in foil and heat it on a grill? If it's a fully cooked ham, it can be served cold as well.

K.,

My mom never baked her hams. She used either an electric skillet or a crock pot. They are VERY tender and tasty either way.

You can also wrap in foil and grill it.
