We have a leak going to our upstairs bathroom. The carpet outside of the bathroom is wet and there is a wet spot on the ceiling in the garage directly under that spot. My husband is very concerned about damage to the wood and drywall if we don't get it fixed NOW, so even though I've called 4 plumbers that have been recommended, I've got one "maybe" for this afternoon and the rest have all said not until Monday.
Do you have a recommendation for a good honest plumber? I would like to at least try contacting reputable plumbers by referral before I just pull one out the phone book to find someone on the fly. I really hate to do that too 'cause I've been burned by plumbers before.

First, I appreciate the referrals! Thanks so much! Unfortunately, I called them all and I couldn't get any of them to come out today. My husband works for a city water department and he had used Roto Rooter sewer services at work before so I reluctantly called them and they were able to come out today. The plumber actually just left and it turned out that one of our AC condensation lines runs to that bathroom and since the sink drain was clogged in there for some reason, it ran up thru the sink and onto the floor.
I never have to go upstairs since it's mainly just a play area for the kids so I didn't know there was a problem until yesterday when my older son came over and went up there looking for some batteries and mentioned the floor was all wet. My daughter figured she or her younger brother had spilled something and tried to dry it up with a towel the day before and never told us it was as bad as it was.
Anyway, when we went up there last night, we found the sink full to the brim, in addition to all the water on the floor, so we used liquid plumber to drain the sink. We didn't know for sure if that was related to all the water on the floor, especially since my husband was told by a previous AC repair person that both our AC lines ran out thru the other upstairs bathroom and we couldn't figure how that sink would have backed up since no one was using that bathroom.
The plumber said draining the sink fixed the problem. It had probably been overflowing for a couple of days which is what caused it to make the carpet so wet and since no one in our family uses that bathroom right now since my oldest son moved out (that was his bathroom), and my daughter didn't mention how wet it had gotten and never noticed the sink overflowing since she doesn't go into that bathroom, I can now understand how the whole thing happened. We did explain to my daughter that she has to tell us when she sees things like that though and I guess we need to make an effort to go upstairs more often to check things out and make sure everything's working ok. :-)
The most amazing thing about the whole situation is that the plumber didn't charge us ANYTHING! He was very honest and didn't charge us a trip fee or anything. I was shocked! Hence, I recommend Roto Rooter at ###-###-#### for your plumbing needs based on this experience. He was honest and could have really made this into a costly repair if he wasn't. We're relieved it's nothing more and we have used our steam cleaner to get up most of the water and have big fans blowing to take care of the rest.

If the leak has been more than a couple days (or if you wait til Monday), your husband is absolutely right to be very, very concerned. But, he shouldn't be so concerned about damage as he should be about the potential for mold growth. Mold can grow within that period of time (2+ days) and for folks with the susceptible genes (about 25% of the population), you can get very sick from the mold, even if you can't see it. If you've had the leakage in the walls/ceiling the mold can grow inside the walls as it loves the wood and drywall. You will likely need far more than a plumber to repair the damage, although that's the first step. I had a beautiful show house in Double Oak with an upstairs and all the toilets would leak. What would wear out is the flap. After awhile it would warp and then leak. I had carpet in the walk in closet in the guest bath soaked. Cleaned it up and again it happened. My ex was on a trip but when he got back fixed it. Also had some problems in this new home and they put something in and when I went to Home Depot to look at the parts they put in, it was like $5 and they charged like $200. Also my garbage diposal was stuck. I soon learned there is a disposal wrench that you put under the motor and turn it and it unjams it. My friend,guess never had one, and she put potato peels in it and jammed it. What a mess. I learned in an apartment after a year of putting in peels found it jammed up. So it may not do it for awhile but it will evenually. I remember bailing out water trying to fix a meal for my ex who announced he was bring an executive for dinner. I was so mad. After all that I think he told his friend he was divorcing me because he just acted weird, and after making a nice chocolate cake refused it. Both men just seemed to act weird there was a air about them. I had no clue doing my wifely duties. Thinking back hurts and it never goes away. Hurts so bad I will never do it again. G. W
