Im pretty sure Im not imagining it but in the last 6 months(?) my 7 yr old daughter seems to be becoming pigeon toed! She was not born that way, she never was as a little child, shes never had any issues with her bones, spine, hips, legs or movement. All the references Ive found so far talk of infants and toddlers being pigeon toed but growing out of it by her age. Has anyone had any experience with this or heard of this? Im most worried about scoliosis but understood that happened at 12 or 13 for girls. anyone??

I have a son who is 9 and he started going pigeon-toed a year or two ago. I talked to his doctor about it at his 9 year check-up and he told me that it isn't uncommon and not to worry.

take her to her pediatrician and ask him or her the questions. You won't know for sure until you do that.

Dear K.,
I would run it by the pediatrician, but I have never heard of anyone "becoming" pigeon toed.
You surely don't want her to get in the habit of walking that way though because I would think it will affect her knees and hips as far as proper growth and alignment in the future.
I loved the roller skates idea...she surely won't get very far with her feet pointing at each other!
Your daughter may or may not be aware she's walking that way, but now is a great time to help her quit.
Best wishes!

Wow! You are busy with 5 kids! I was pigeon toed as a young girl and my Dr. told my mom to start me in ballet classes. I liked them, although never graceful. The positions you have to stand in/or do make you turn your feet out. I wasn't pigeon toed after maybe 6mo-yr of lessons. (once a week). Just an idea that may be fun for her! (I stayed in ballet till I was about 12, so maybe 6 years). Good luck!

She may not be actually pigeon toed in that her feet themselves are still straight, but she may be getting into some poor posture/ walking habits. If this is the case, you should explain to and show her the right way to place her feet and have her practice walking. Having lines to follow may help as well as have her look at her feet. It will take a lot of reminders, but once her muscle memory has built up her steps should straiten out. constant reminders can get tiring on both of you, but don't give up now as poor posture/ walking can have affects throughout her body for a life time.

Take her roller skating (regular skates, not inline). She won't be able to skate unless she holds her feet normally. If she does it pigeon toed, her skates will roll together and run into each other. I had a friend in the 70's whos mom did that and eventually she stopped being pigeon toed. Not to mention that she got REALLY good on skates.
